"In the end we will conserve only what we love;
We will love only what we understand;
We will understand only what we have been taught."
--Baba Dioum, Senegalese ecologist
For him, what an artist is, is a person
who transforms nature by looking at nature,
passing it through the soul, and in the expression of what the soul experiences
in nature,
something more natural than nature itself emerges.
Which is as close as we get to God.
--Historian, William Cronon
describing architect Frank Lloyd Wright's view of art
in Ken Burns' documentary on Wright.

The surface of the sea is a boundary that informs us about all boundaries, blinding us to the nature of the world on the other side. We look down at that boundary from above and it throws back the familiar stuff of our customary environment–sky, cloud, sun, moon, an perhaps a fragment of our own image. It draws a line, warns against crossing into the vague twilight realm below . But the ultimate athletic quest takes us past all boundaries of this world; we enter the sea as did our ancient ancestors, aided now by simple technology that frees us as human beings have never before been free. We penetrate that fatal surface and our passing leaves not the slightest rip or tear. The surface shines above us, a crinkle mirror defining death and live. Best not look at it too long for it might seduce us with its definitions and call us back to the world of light an air. We have crossed a boundary and now accept our transformation. We turn from the shining surface and fly as dreamers fly, softly descending, drifting past wonders, reliving our most beautiful nightmares. --George Leonard, The Ultimate
